My deep interest in science and medicine began at Duke University. My uncle was a biochemist there, so I was able to work in his lab for three summers where I ran tests and interacted with physicians.  I really liked the science and seeing how the experiments played out.  The excitement and enthusiasm of the physicians and researchers was contagious.  I enjoyed being on the forefront of progress and discovery.

At HOA, I get to combine my passion for clinical research with the best in patient care. The successes are more immediate and tangible than in a lab environment, and it is exciting to really be helping people with what we do.  In that regard, I can’t overemphasize the importance of HOA being in the National Cancer Institute Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP). I am privileged to serve as the Principle Investigator of our local CCOP as well as participate nationally in committees and studies. I currently chair a national CCOP Committee (Cancer and Leukemia Group B) and lead a pain prevention trial.

HOA is able to provide many of the same treatments offered at renowned major cancer centers.  HOA is arguably among the leaders in our field in the entire country.  We were recently one of just ten practices recognized by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) with the 2008 Clinical Trials Participation Award. This award honored HOA for our commitment to improving the care of patients with cancer through increased participation in clinical trials.  This honor underscores the importance of our clinical research to our community. In our clinical research, we do a lot of cancer control work as well as clinical trials in symptom management and supportive care. That means we’re helping patients deal with pain, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath and other symptoms.  We also participate in studies dealing with “facing forward”, smoking cessation, etc. We have also participated in breast and prostate prevention trials.

HOA is really like no other practice.  Not only is it a top clinical practice with doctors who are very well respected locally and nationally, but also the whole staff works incredibly well together.  Really, their unmatched competence coupled with great spirit allows HOA to provide care that is second to none.

In treating my patients, I believe it is important to be honest yet hopeful.  I truly love what I do, but the job can be emotionally draining. To relax, I like to spend time with my family.  My wife and I live in the Jamesville-Dewitt area with our son. We like to swim, boat, golf, and ski. I’ve learned some valuable lessons from my patients.  Probably the most important lesson is to stay active in life and that attitude makes a large difference in a person’s overall wellness.
