Leukemia Specialists in Central New York

Leukemia is a cancer that develops in the cells that form blood. It is classified based on which blood-making cell it begins in: lymphocytic cells, which lead to white blood cell development, or myeloid cells, which are related to red blood cell, platelet, and some white cell development.

Additionally, leukemia can be categorized by how fast it grows.

  • Chronic leukemia: Chronic leukemia grows slowly. In the early stages, leukemia cells may still function like healthy blood cells, resulting in no symptoms or symptoms that could be related to another condition. Because of this, many people are diagnosed after routine blood tests at regular checkups. If symptoms do occur, they are usually mild and tend to worsen gradually over time.
  • Acute leukemia: Acute leukemia grows quickly. The cancer cells are unable to do the work of healthy blood cells, so symptoms typically appear sooner and may worsen quickly without treatment.

At Hematology-Oncology Associates of CNY (HOA), our leukemia specialists are trained in both hematology, the treatment of blood disorders, and oncology, the treatment of cancer. We are dedicated to ensuring that each patient at our Syracuse-area cancer centers receives a personalized care plan tailored to their leukemia subtype, stage, and overall health.
